The Texas Legislature recently approved several bills that Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who presides over the Senate, designated as priority issues at the beginning of the session.

Earlier this month, lawmakers approved a constitutional amendment that establishes the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas and allocates $3 billion in funding for the effort. The measure will go before voters in November.

Last Tuesday, the House signed off on a measure to establish a state cryptocurrency reserve. Senate Bill 21 doesn't specify an initial deposit amount for the reserve, but that figure could be determined in the coming days as the state budget is finalized.

And last Thursday, the House unanimously passed Senate Bill 20, which bans AI-generated child pornography. "As Texas enters the digital age, our state must be very careful about our approach to artificial intelligence," Patrick said in a March statement.

Ki Charter is the first charter school system in Texas to use ZeroEyes, an AI-powered software designed to detect guns through existing surveillance cameras. The organization, which serves over 6,500 students across eight campuses, rolled out the technology last week.

ZeroEyes uses an algorithm that alerts human monitors at a central 24/7 command center when it detects firearms. The monitors then determine whether the threat is legitimate and notify school officials and local law enforcement, all within seconds.

The company was founded by a group of Navy SEALs in response to the 2018 Parkland shooting. Last year, the technology alerted authorities to a potential threat from three individuals carrying AK-47s at a Texas elementary school.

ZeroEyes charges between $20 and $60 per camera to deploy its software, and it has staff to help potential clients identify and apply for grants.
