| Crowds Gather for May Day Rally in Atlanta Hundreds gathered outside the Georgia State Capitol on Thursday to protest in honor of May Day, a public holiday focused on improving pay and working conditions around the country. The 2025 rally theme, "Stop the Billionaire Agenda," had many voicing opposition against the Trump administration's trade tensions and recent decisions to cut federal jobs, which protestors argue harm working-class Americans. Immigration labor rights were also a major focus at the event, as the Trump administration continues to crack down on America's immigrant workforce. Protestors emphasized the essential role of immigrant labor in the U.S. economy. | Georgia Sued Over Social Media Age Verification Georgia became the eighth U.S. state to face a lawsuit over a new law requiring parental consent for children under the age of 16 to use social media. The law, titled "Protecting Georgia's Children on Social Media Act of 2024," is set to take effect on July 1. It mandates that social media platforms make "commercially reasonable efforts" to verify users' ages. Technology trade group NetChoice filed a lawsuit in federal court in Atlanta on Thursday, arguing the law violates the First and 14th Amendments by limiting free speech and due process. NetChoice hopes to be the next to get the age restriction law blocked; similar state laws have been overturned by federal judges nationwide. | Federal Funding Cut for School Mental Health Georgians are concerned after the Trump administration eliminated $1 billion in federal grants, mostly allocated for U.S. schools to hire and train more therapists. The grants were funded through the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a law that was passed in 2022 in response to the Uvalde shooting. The cuts have prompted safety concerns for education advocates in Georgia, especially since the state has a school counselor shortage. "This decision is deeply disappointing—and it's dangerous," said Layla Renee Contreras, head of the advocacy group Change for Chee. The U.S. Department of Education claims the program promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) agendas, which it views as politically motivated. "The grants ran afoul of their intended purpose," said Madi Biedermann, a spokesperson for the Education Department. The Education Department stated that the agency "plans to re-envision and re-compete its mental health program funds to more effectively support students' behavioral health needs." | |
