Moving to Barcelona has been one of the biggest (and best!) adventures of our lives. 🥰
There are so many things we love about living here (and things that have been an adjustment, too!), so in the spirit of oversharing—here are five things we love about living in Barcelona!
1. We Walk EVERYWHERE!
Need to grab groceries? Walk. School drop-off? Walk. Bank, post office, pharmacy, nail salon, hair salon? Walk, walk, walk. I love that everything we need is just a few steps away—no car required. I used to have to make a big effort to reach my 10,000-steps-a-day goal, and now it's easy! (Thank goodness for my favorite tennis shoes!)
2. Weekend Getaways are Ridiculously Easy!
One of the things I love most about living here is how effortlessly we can explore new places. With budget airlines and an amazing train system, we've taken trips to Italy for less than 50 euros per person!
But what really gets me is the kind of learning our kids are experiencing. Standing in ancient ruins, walking through medieval streets, and tasting foods from different cultures—these are the kinds of lessons no classroom can teach. It's been incredible to see the world through their eyes. (Also, these travel backpacks have been a game-changer!)
3. Getting to Speak in Spanish Again
I studied Spanish in grade school and college, spent a semester in Madrid living with a host family, and even taught workshops in Spanish when Jeff and I lived in Mexico!
But being fully immersed again? It's next level. I'm still not as fluent as I want to be–taking private lessons has helped–but honestly, there's no better teacher than real-life conversations (and the occasional embarrassing mix-up). (I love my Spanish tutor, Sole, and she offers remote lessons if anyone is looking!)
4. The FOOD. Oh, the Food.
Groceries are cheaper, ingredients are fresher, and even the simplest things—like a loaf of bread or a wedge of cheese—just taste better.
One thing I especially love is the NutriScore labels on food packaging, which rank products from A (healthiest) to E (least healthy) based on their nutritional value—making it so much easier to make informed choices. (Why doesn't the U.S. have this?!)
Life in Barcelona (and Spain in general, for that matter) has a different rhythm—long, leisurely meals, siesta hours in the middle of the day, and a general culture that values living over hustling.
People here aren't in a rush to check things off a to-do list, that's for sure! (And, I'll admit, this has been frustrating at times to get used to.)
In the U.S., being busy was almost a badge of honor- how much I worked, how packed my schedule was, how early I woke up—I sometimes let it define my success.
I'm learning to embrace a simpler, less rushed, less commercial way of life.♥️
