Originally located in the 400 block of East Simpson Street, it served the community for decades before home delivery began in 1956 when the population reached 2,000. | Senate Confirms Denver CEO as Energy Secretary The Senate confirmed fossil fuel executive Chris Wright as energy secretary in a 59-38 vote on Monday, advancing President Trump’s push for U.S. “energy dominance.” Wright, CEO of Denver-based Liberty Energy, has been critical of strict climate policies and vows to expand fossil fuel production. During his confirmation hearing, he promoted an “all-of-the-above” energy strategy, supporting fossil fuels, nuclear power, and renewables such as wind and solar. Despite environmental concerns, he received bipartisan support, including from Colorado’s Democratic senators. As energy secretary, he will play a key role in the administration’s National Energy Council, focusing on deregulation and boosting domestic energy production. | TABOR Calculation Error May Cost $77M Nearly 24,000 Coloradans will seemingly vanish from the state’s population count this year due to a TABOR calculation error, leading to a potential $77 million cut in public services. The error stems from outdated formulas that fail to account for Census corrections, underestimating population growth. Lawmakers on the Joint Budget Committee are considering a rare legislative fix to prevent similar miscalculations in the future. While there’s bipartisan support, legislators are cautious about appearing to bypass TABOR rules, as the change could impact taxpayer refunds. Even with a fix, Colorado still faces a $1 billion budget shortfall. | Historic Sites Added to Endangered Places List At a recent Colorado Preservation Conference, four new sites were added to Colorado’s Most Endangered Places list: the Indiana Jones Bed & Breakfast in Antonito, the Knearl Block and Opera House in Brush, the Newman Block in Granada, and the old Town Hall in Red Cliff. The Indiana Jones Bed & Breakfast in Antonito, built in 1888, gained fame when it was featured in the 1989 film but now faces structural issues. The Knearl Block, once a cultural hub, suffers from decay. In Granada, the Newman Block played a role in supporting Japanese Americans during WWII, while the Red Cliff Town Hall, a relic of early mining days, sits empty. Being added to the Most Endangered Places list grants these sites access to resources and preservation support. | |
