3 tips for saving at the grocery store

Hi reader,

I had the honor of sharing budgeting tips on Yahoo Finance yesterday. In a LIVE interview!

The challenge was thinking of what to share within a short time limit. I knew I couldn't condense my entire Grocery Budget Bootcamp course to one interview.

So, I landed on these three tips for saving money at the grocery store. And I wanted to make sure you saw them too:

1. Start with a list. It sounds obvious, but many families walk into the store without knowing what they're going to buy. This leads to overspending on the front end, and wasting food at the end of the week because you didn't have a plan for what you bought. Make a list at home for everything you need and verify that you don't already have those items before you leave.

2. Pay attention to unit pricing. Unit pricing is the price per ounce (or pound), and most stores include unit pricing on the price tag itself. Compare different brands, and even different sizes of the same brand to find the lowest price per ounce. On one shopping trip, the smallest bottle of ketchup was 50% less than the regular size, and just last week store-brand "honey o's" was $3 cheaper than the name brand - for the same size box!

3. Compare bagged produce to individual items. Sometimes the individual items are the better price per pound than the bagged items, and sometimes it's the other way around. Remember that the store is in the business of making money, so don't assume that those pre-bagged apples and oranges are the better deal.

These tips fit in my grocery budget system that has worked for my family and thousands of others for over 10 years. In fact, I have a whole lesson just on a creating a shopping list. There is a right and wrong way!

Enrollment for Grocery Budget Bootcamp opens soon. And to kick start the savings, I'm hosting my all time favorite training, Grocery Savings Made Simple.

This FREE training starts February 12th! The catch is, you have to sign up to join.

I'm super excited about this training AND the upcoming GBB class. Managing a grocery budget is a life changer for most families and I'd love for you to be one of them!
