Click here Friday, 1 November 2024 | Issue 278 WHO / Fanjan Combrink 4-15 November Twelfth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) for a WHO instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and responseIn December 2021, the World Health Assembly established an Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) to draft and negotiate a convention, agreement or other international instrument under the Constitution of the World Health Organization, to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. The Twelfth meeting of the INB is to be held in hybrid format from 4-15 November 2024. The opening and closing plenary sessions of the INB are open to WHO Member States, Associate Members, Observers and regional economic integration organizations, as well all relevant stakeholders. These sessions, on 4 November and 15 November, will be publicly webcast and archived for later viewing. Relevant stakeholders (Annexes A–E) will be invited to join for a brief open session at the beginning of each day to be updated on progress and provide their views on relevant Articles. Substantive negotiating sessions will be held in closed format. 4-10 November Medicine Safety Week From 4 to 10 November 2024, #MedSafetyWeek will focus on preventing side effects—a reminder to use medications safely and to report any suspected adverse reactions. By using medicines correctly, we can drastically reduce the risk of side effects and severe harm. And by reporting side effects when they occur, we can help make medicines safer for everyone. This is an international campaign led by Uppsala Monitoring Centre, WHO’s Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring, involving 107 organizations across 94 countries. Campaign materials are embargoed until 00.01 (local time), 4 November 2024. Sunday, 3 November One Health Day One Health Day, celebrated annually on 3 November, is an international campaign co-coordinated by nongovernmental and civil society organizations. The goal of One Health Day is to attract global attention, increase public awareness and mobilize action. Monday, 4 November Press conference ahead of Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children When: Monday, 4 November 2024, 16h CET/Geneva (No embargo) WHO is supporting the first-ever Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, to be held in Bogota, Colombia, 7-8 November. The press conference on 4 November will offer background information about the impacts of violence against children, the forms it takes and how it can be prevented -- as well as a preview of milestone moments expected at the ministerial conference. Detailed information on the event To join the press conference: Tuesday, 5 November Launch of WHO global priority endemic pathogens for vaccine research and development On 5 November 2024, 01:30 CET, eBioMedicine will publish a WHO study naming the top priority endemic pathogens for new vaccine research and development (R&D). The WHO study is the first global effort to systematically prioritize pathogens that cause diseases regularly in communities, based on criteria that includes regional disease burden, antimicrobial resistance risk, and socio-economic impact, among others. The list provides an equitable and transparent evidence base to set regional and global agendas for new vaccine R&D and manufacturing, and is intended to give academia, funders, manufacturers and countries a clear direction on where vaccine R&D could have the most impact. For queries or interview requests, please contact mediainquiries@who.int Thursday, 7 November Launch of the COP29 special report on climate and health and a guidance on integrating health into Nationally Determined Contributions In the lead up to COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, WHO will release two key documents highlighting the importance of climate action to improve health and wellbeing: the COP29 special report on climate change and health – Health is the argument for climate action and Quality criteria for integrating health into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). In these documents, WHO stresses the importance of positioning health at the core of all climate negotiations, strategies, policies and action plans, to save lives and secure healthier futures for present and future generations. An embargoed press conference will take place at 14.00 CET on 07 November, in which Dr Maria Neira, Director of the WHO’s Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health; Dr Vanessa Kerry, WHO Director-General Special Envoy for Climate Change and Health; and Dr Diarmid Campbell-Lendrum, Team Lead, Climate Change and Health at WHO will present the reports, brief on health initiatives at COP29 and discuss health arguments for immediate and decisive action by climate negotiators at COP29.
