| Veterans Day Commemorations There are many ceremonies being held in Virginia to honor veterans today. In Northern Virginia, the Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and an annual program at the Military Women's Memorial begin at 11 a.m., while across the river, the United States Navy Band plays at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library at 1 p.m. The Virginia War Memorial in Richmond hosts a ceremony at 11 a.m. featuring a tribute to the Commonwealth's Blue Star families. At 2 p.m. is a more musical tribute at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds. There are several ceremonies across Southwest Virginia, including at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford at 11 a.m. There are also events at Appomattox Court House and the Franklin County Veterans' Park. In the Virginia Beach region, the Tidewater Veterans Day Parade begins at 9 a.m. The holiday doesn't end at sundown. Tomorrow, volunteers will return to Cedar Grove Cemetery in Williamsburg to pick up the flags placed for today. | Commanders Barely Lose The Pittsburgh Steelers edged the Washington Commanders 28-27 in a battle of playoff teams. Early in the game, Pittsburgh tried a fake punt from deep in its own end and turned the ball over. The Commanders scored a touchdown a few plays later. Washington built a 10-point lead but allowed the Steelers to rally and retake the lead in the fourth. The Commanders completed a long pass on fourth down with less than two minutes left and appeared to have gained enough for a first down. However, the officials placed the ball behind the line to gain, and the spot was upheld on review. With the loss, the Commanders drop to 7-3 and will take the field again on Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles. | What's Ahead in Politics Virginia will see political changes as a result of last week's elections. Two sitting state senators, one a Democrat and the other a Republican, were elected to Congress, leaving their seats open. Democrats hold a narrow 21-19 majority in the upper house, but that could change after the special elections. No date has been set yet for either special election, but state law says it should be scheduled within 30 days of a vacancy. At least four Republicans and six Democrats are expected to take part. Gov. Glenn Youngkin said he would not leave his office. Youngkin had been rumored to be considering a position with the incoming Trump administration but announced he would remain in office through 2025. Rep. Gerry Connolly, a Democrat representing the 11th District, also says he will remain in office while he battles esophageal cancer. He says he learned of the diagnosis right around Election Day. "I will attack this the only way I know how -- with Irish fight and humor," the congressman told constituents. Like The Virginia Flyover? Share it with a friend! | |
