North Carolina's 100 county boards of elections met Friday to certify that general election votes were counted and tabulated correctly. As of 10:30 p.m., 89 counties had completed the job.

Brunswick, Durham, Halifax, Sampson, and Watauga counties continued canvassing Friday, while Chatham, Craven, Cumberland, Forsyth, Randolph, and Yancey counties planned to resume today.

The process flipped the lead in a state Supreme Court race. Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs now leads by 106 votes. Just days before, she trailed Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin by 10,000 votes. Either candidate could demand a recount but would need to do so by Tuesday at noon.

New Hanover County's BOE voted Friday to dismiss a protest filed by a board of commissioners candidate alleging absentee and provisional ballot counting laws weren't followed.

Meanwhile, the Wake County BOE decided to count ballots cast by three people who voted early but died before Election Day.

Article Icon 1Fired FEMA Agent Says Anti-Trump Protocols Impacted NC

Former FEMA agent Marn’i Washington, who was fired after news surfaced that she instructed disaster relief workers to avoid hurricane-damaged Florida homes displaying Trump campaign signs, says similar “avoidance” protocols were in place in the Carolinas.

A FEMA spokesperson says the agency was “deeply disturbed” by Washington’s actions following Hurricane Milton and insisted it was an isolated incident. Washington, however, claims her actions were consistent with agency guidance as part of a “community trend” and were not isolated to her team alone.

FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell will have to answer questions about these and other accusations Tuesday at a congressional hearing on the agency’s response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Washington welcomed the investigation and asked the committee to demand the incident reports, adding, “They will find this is not isolated. I state this over and over again. This is colossal.”

Article Icon 1100+ Trucks Ticketed for Using Non-Truck Routes

Large trucks are being ticketed for using "non-truck routes" to cross the North Carolina-Tennessee border since they aren't able to take I-40, which remains closed after a portion of it fell into the Pigeon River Gorge due to flooding from Hurricane Helene.

Last Thursday alone, law enforcement handed out more than 100 tickets to drivers of trucks that had overturned or gotten stuck on narrow, twisting roads.

NCDOT posted photos of the mishaps and warned: "The ONLY large truck routes to/from western NC are I-77 to I-81 or I-40 to U.S. 74. If GPS apps send you to other routes, don't try it. Doing so may lead to a ticket, getting stuck, or even overturning."
