Article Icon 1Proxy Fight Set for Southwest Airlines

Elliott Investment Management, the hedge fund that owns 11% of Dallas-based Southwest Airlines common stock, called for a special shareholder meeting in December to vote on replacing eight Southwest board directors.

The group is seeking the ouster of Southwest CEO Bob Jordan and pushing the airline to increase profitability by ending long-standing practices such as open seating. It’s the private equity firm’s first proxy fight since 2017.

“Absent a thorough reconstitution of its Board, the story of Southwest will remain one of empty promises and unfulfilled potential,” hedge fund officials said.

A member of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, 32-year-old Jorgenys Robertson Cova, has been arrested in Houston for theft and is suspected of attempting to recruit middle school students for a shoplifting ring.

Cova crossed the border illegally in 2022 and has been charged with multiple burglaries in Texas and Arizona. Officials say he targeted vulnerable teens because they face fewer legal consequences when caught.

The allegations against Cova add to the growing list of criminal activity associated with the violent Venezuelan gang.

Texas ranks near the top of a list of states with the most stressed workers, coming in 7th, according to a study by personal injury firm Premier Law Group.

The study used data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau to compute a “stress score” for each state based on average hourly earnings, working hours, injury rates, commute times, and opportunities to work remotely.

Texas scored 58.5, behind first-place Louisiana, which received a score of 73.8. West Virginia, Mississippi, Kentucky, Nevada, and Arkansas also scored higher than Texas.

Meanwhile, Minnesota ranks as the state with the least stressed workers, with a score of 32.6.
