Article Icon 1President Visits as Florida Digs Out

President Joe Biden arrived in Florida on Sunday morning for his second visit to the state’s hurricane-ravaged communities in a little more than a week. One million people remain without power, and flooding persists.

After an aerial tour of stretches of battered coastline and the shredded roof of a major sports stadium, Biden delivered remarks in St. Pete Beach.

Biden said while the state avoided the worst-case scenario, Milton wrought widespread destruction, submerging entire neighborhoods under several feet of floodwater, destroying homes, and killing at least 17 people.

Biden approved a disaster declaration on Saturday, freeing up federal funding for people affected by Milton, including grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and loans. By Sunday, more than 250,000 Floridians had registered for assistance.

Article Icon 1Florida Supreme Court Sides with DeSantis over Abortion Webpage

The Florida Supreme Court unanimously rejected an attempt to block Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration from using government resources to advocate against the state's abortion access ballot measure.

The case was filed in September and alleged that top leaders were misusing and abusing their offices in opposition to the amendment, which would protect abortion access until the point of viability.

Last week, a Tallahassee judge tossed out a similar suit filed by the ACLU of Florida and Southern Legal Counsel, which sought to stop the use of state resources to defeat Amendment 4.
