how to get the stinky smell out of glass jars

Hi reader,

Have you ever wanted to reuse a glass jar for something, but couldn't get rid of the smell of whatever was previously in the jar? (like using pickle jars for kombucha? Or spaghetti jars for soup?)

Re-using glass jars is an easy step you can take to non-toxic living, and it's frugal too! Why pay for brand new jars when you can simply re-use the ones you already have?!

I shared in last week's newsletter that instead of buying new gallon jars, I've been buying gallons of pickles and re-using those glass jars instead. It didn't dawn on me to share how I got the pickle smell out of the jars until a reader replied and asked!

So here's my secret to getting rid of the smell in glass jars:

  1. Once the jar is emptied, wash it out with soap and water.
  2. Add a couple squirts of dish soap into the jar and fill it halfway with hot water. Stir so the water itself gets sudsy. Add more hot water to the jar, filling it as much as you can without spilling. (Tip: Add more squirts if the jar is really big, but 2-3 works for the average quart-sized jar.)
  3. Add the lid to the jar and close it tight. Turn the jar upside down and let the jar sit for about 24 hours. You can keep it in the kitchen sink if you're afraid of the jar leaking, but mine do well on the counter.
  4. After 24 hours, empty the water out and wash again with soap and water.

Seems pretty easy, right? It is!

And this works so much better than running it through the dishwasher (over and over, if you're like me) or any other cleaning method. And if this works on pickles, it should work on just about anything else!

By the way, once your jars are clean, here's how you can easily remove the labels!

Blessings!
