APRIL 2024 My New Roots Monthly Spring, that ephemeral interlude between the chill of winter and the blaze of summer, unfurls its tender tendrils like a verdant symphony across the landscape. As the frost retreats and the days stretch longer, nature awakens from its slumber, bursting forth with a riot of colours and fragrances. In this season of renewal, the humble lettuce emerges as a stalwart symbol of freshness and vitality. Lettuces, with their delicate leaves and crisp textures, mirror the essence of spring itself - vibrant, tender, and brimming with potential. From the pale green hues of butter lettuce to the deep emerald tones of romaine, each variety tells a story of growth and resilience, of patiently awaiting its moment to flourish under the gentle caress of the sun. In the kitchen, lettuces take centre stage, their crispness and versatility inspiring chefs and home cooks alike to create a myriad of culinary delights. From the simplicity of a classic Caesar salad (or try it roasted - details below!) to the complexity of a composed spring salad, lettuces lend their fresh flavour and vibrant colour to a variety of dishes. Their delicate leaves provide the perfect canvas for a symphony of flavours and textures, from creamy dressings to crunchy croutons, from tangy vinaigrettes to sweet fruits and nuts. Whether enjoyed as a refreshing side dish or elevated to the star of the show, lettuces offer a feast for the senses, tantalizing the taste buds and nourishing the body with each delicious bite. Beyond their culinary appeal, lettuces also hold a deeper significance in our cultural consciousness. As symbols of fertility and abundance, they have been revered by ancient civilizations and modern societies alike, their verdant leaves evoking visions of prosperity and growth. In the language of flowers, lettuces are associated with rebirth and regeneration, their tender shoots heralding the arrival of spring and the promise of new life. In this way, lettuces serve as a reminder of the cyclical nature of existence, of the eternal dance of birth, growth, and renewal that defines the rhythm of the seasons. This newsletter celebrates the life-force, beauty, flavours, and symbolism of this stunning Earth gift. I hope you find some inspiration here, and feel encouraged to connect on a deeper level with the leafy greens around you. Lettuce rejoice! Lots of love, Sarah B
How to Grow Lettuce at Home One of my favourite foods in the garden and also one of the simplest ways to grow your own food - potted lettuce plants are an easy, exciting, delicious, and nutritious way to connect to your body on a deeper level. There's nothing like a sweet and crispy lettuce leaf freshly picked that you planted from seed, watched sprout, and then cared for as it matured! A pot of lettuce is a beautiful gift to yourself or others and makes a perfect activity to do with children. | | In less than 15 minutes, you can be well on your way to growing your own lettuce at home with my tutorial on Grow. Because I can't think of anything more fulfilling than to get your hands in the dirt, and in order to inspire you to reconnect with your food - even a leaf of lettuce - I'd love to offer you your first month to Grow for $5. In 15 minutes and for $5, you're nearly there to your first harvest, AND you will receive access to everything else Grow has to offer. Will I see you there? Here's what you'll need to get started: - A container (a pot, tin with poked draining holes, a planter box or tray, etc.)
- Potting soil (purchased from local source or garden centre, organic if possible)
- Lettuce seeds (organic if possible, learn more here!)
- Fresh water
- Sunny location (beware of intense full sun though as lettuce can be quite tender!)

Golden Circle Retreat Bali, March 2025 My friends, it is with terrific excitement that I announce the next Golden Circle Retreat with Mikkala Marilyn Kissi in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia! We have had so many requests to return to the island where it all began for us, and host another immersive experience of nature, education, food, movement, and connection. Through holding these special retreats for eight years, I understand how much women want to travel, but they don't just seek a destination - they want a purpose - and our exceptional curriculum offers so much more than a "yoga retreat". It is true self-discovery, community, inspiration, and learning that goes far beyond our week together. Our program is meant to set you up for a potential lifetime transformation. | | SAVE THE DATES March 13 – 19, 2025 March 21 – 27, 2025 We officially launch in the coming days, so if you want to be the first to know when tickets become available, email info@goldencircleretreats.com with BALI in the subject line.
You will be registered for our GCR newsletter and receive the announcement as soon as we go live! My joy is overflowing and I cannot wait to see you next year in Bali ๐บ
Breathwork in Toronto
As you know, breathwork has changed my life in a profound way. It has helped me heal from a massive spinal injury, reduce the pain and inflammation in my body, and regulate my nervous system. I have also gained some of the most deep and meaningful spiritual insights through this practice - experiences with my higher self that words cannot describe - all just by changing the rhythm and depth of my breath. I am so in love with this practice, and becoming certified to teach in order to help others was a decision I am so glad that I made.
Join me seasonally for the remainder of the year - June 21, September 20, and December 20. | | | | Ripley Gearing up for my travels to Italy, I just finished watching Ripley on Netflix. It is STUNNING! If you're a lover of beauty, style, and a creative perspective, this series is for you. Set on the beautiful Amalfi coast, this American neo-noir psychological thriller television series is based on Patricia Highsmith's 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. I loved the 1999 film as well, but the build up in the 8-part series was so deliciously slow and thick with tension. | | | | 15-Minute Weights I have a new habit and it's all about breaking up my movement throughout the day, including lifting weights after lunch. I set aside 10-15 minutes to do one of the following resistance programs by Fit by Mik, and after just a few weeks, I'm already noticing a difference. I feel more support and strength in my body, and that is a wonderful thing! I'm also realizing that I don't need to go to the gym for an hour every day to make a positive change in my life - committing to a quarter hour of strength training and being consistent with it, is far better than setting unrealistic goals and expectations and not doing anything at all! I hope this gives you some inspiration :)
