I am Gujarati living in Canada for many years. There is a saying that you can take Gujarati out of Gujarat but you cannot take out Gujarat out of them ....lol. So no matter where we live, we still follow our traditions and we love our traditional food more than anything in the world. There is a different kind of satisfaction when we eat our food. I cook and love multinational cuisine but there is something with our food which we never get tired of. Recently I invited few of my friends for the dinner. They had a special request to make traditional desi style Gujarati dinner. It mean something our grand parents used to eat every day. As always, I was up for the challenge. They wanted to eat baingan bharta for sure. When I invite anyone at my place, I always go out of way to make as many dishes as I can. I was thinking what can I prepare that is desi which my friends will enjoy. My friends were pleasantly surprised to see all the food I made and we had so much fun.
There are the dishes I prepared.
Olo also called Baingan Bharta
This dish is made with roasted eggplant cooked with spring onion or regular onion, garlic and tomato.
Methi Papad Sabji
This dish is made with fenugreek seeds cooked in tomato sauce with papad (papadum).
Khichdi
Khichdi is prepared using rice, moong dal and toor dal.
Gujarati Fada Lapsi or Kanshar or Broken Wheat Halwa
This is a sweet dish made with broken wheat and jaggery.
Masala Chaas / Spiced Lassi
This is the drink we like to have with our tradition food. This is made with whisked yogurt and spices.
Mango Pickle and Dry Garlic Chutney
No food is complete without pickle and chutney on the side.
We also served roasted khichiya (rice) papad on the side.
This thali was so satisfying that everyone absolutely loved it! Hopefully, you will try some of these dishes to enjoy the taste of Gujarat.
