For the month of March, I'm taking over the Friday Well Equipped newsletter to bring you manageable tips for spring cleaning those out-of-sight, out-of-mind spots in your kitchen. |
Have a Look Inside My Very Lived-In Kitchen |
I'm going to let you in on my dirty little secret: Though I write about cleaning, my kitchen is rarely spotless. Most days, you'll find dishes in the sink, random tools on the counter, and dust on the baseboards. It's just the reality of a house with two working parents (well, at least one without a housekeeper).
Luckily, I have tools to help me keep my kitchen clean enough. I manage to sweep and mop the floors at the same time thanks to my life-changing mop vac, but I don't get into the nooks and crannies very often. And the dishwasher handles most of the everyday dishes, but the hand-wash-only stuff usually piles up until I get to it over the weekend. Plus, as you'll see in the short video tour I shared on Epi's Instagram this week, I sometimes even discover a random mystery smudge.
Below, you'll find a few of the products that help me stay on top of the day-to-day messes, and be sure to check out my kitchen tour, too. |

I used to be the kind of person who took six months to go through an entire roll of paper towels. Then I had kids. But this tiny broom and dustpan finally helped me curb my paper towel habit. In addition to removing crumbs from the counter, dinner table, and high chair, it's also much better than microfiber and sponges for getting into corners and crevices (watch me use it here). The best part? I can quickly wash the synthetic bristles with hot water and dish soap. |

I will never stop singing the praises of my mop vac, a hybrid vacuum cleaner-mop that sucks up dirt and debris while also mopping. It's such a cleaning dream that I am not exaggerating when I say it changed my life—my floors have never been so consistently clean. After testing nine models, I found this Tineco to be the best for kitchen floors (watch me use it)—but it can also be converted to a hand vac with an included crevice attachment for getting into secret crumb catchers like silverware trays and utensil caddies. |

I was late to the dish-spray party and now I don't ever want to leave. Since I picked up my first bottle of Dawn Powerwash a few months ago, I've discovered it's good for so much more than dishes: spills on the rug, sneakers, crusty stovetops, the list goes on. But my favorite use is still dishes—especially the ones I can't get to right away. Whether I'm in the middle of preparing a big meal or don't have the energy to hand-wash a sheet pan, a quick spray of this stuff makes cleaning later so much easier. |

I live in an old house with two kids, a messy husband, and a shaggy rescue mutt—so I've just accepted the fact that I'm in an uphill battle with dust. But since putting an air purifier in the kitchen, I've noticed so much less of it on surfaces and shelves. Even better, a dedicated kitchen air purifier can help improve the air in your entire home because no matter what kind of stove you use, cooking is the main source of residential air pollution. |
