Hey there reader,
I want to talk a bit about weight loss struggles today. You've been there, I've been there, we've all been there.
I think it's safe to say there's no getting around the struggles of losing weight.
Even 10+ years into my weight loss journey (and owner of Organize Yourself Skinny), I still have regular moments where I'd rather eat pizza over salad, and the couch wins over the treadmill.
It's how the process goes, not to mention that I'm human.
The good news is I handle weight loss struggles much differently today than I did over a decade ago.
Back then, I would become defeated and give up. Today, I dust myself, get back on track, and keep pushing forward. Giving up is never an option.
Here are some common weight-loss challenges I struggled with and how I handled each one, then and now.
Challenge #1. No clue where to start
I became paralyzed by the mountain of weight loss information out there. What should I eat? Should I do low carb, vegetarian, Keto, or whatever fad was popular at the time?
I would stock up on Lean Cuisines most of the time, cross my fingers, and hope for the best.
Then there was exercise. When should I exercise? What should I do?
I would wake up every morning with the desire to change my life and then go to bed with regret because I didn't.
I didn't know how to start a lifestyle change, and I didn't have a plan. This cycle kept me very discouraged about losing weight.
⭐️ Today, I understand that losing weight requires a plan. I can't just wake up and hope for the best. I needed to create structure in my life that encourages a healthy lifestyle.
It doesn't need to be a complicated plan filled with diet fads and unrealistic expectations, but some organization and structure are essential.
If I want to be successful, I must plan out my meals, prep some food ahead of time, and schedule exercise for the week.
I can't go into the week flying by the seat of my pants, hoping life will turn out the way I want. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. I need to start my week with a plan; a simple plan.
Challenge #2. Do great for a couple of days, then back to old habits.
It seemed like I would lose motivation before really getting started. As I said, I would wake up ready to make all kinds of changes, and by the time I finished my first cup of coffee, I'd already be thinking, "I'll start tomorrow." π
Some weeks I'd get through a couple of days of "eating healthy" and even exercising, but all those efforts went out the window by the weekend. I had zero discipline.
⭐️ Today, I have my life set up where healthy eating habits and exercise are a priority.
I'm not trying to do these things separately from the rest of my life if that makes sense.
I've set up routines that keep chaos and stress under control so I can focus on the things that matter to me.
I've learned that a healthy lifestyle is near impossible to create when surviving in the "hot zone" moments.
So it wasn't necessarily losing motivation as it was falling back into old comfortable habits because that's how I coped with stress and chaos.
Once I got those things under control, staying motivated on my weight loss journey became easier.
π Not saying life doesn't get in the way at times or I don't get lazy; I just learned losing motivation has more to do with what's going on around me, not what's going on inside of me. π
Challenge #3 Zero time
Back then, every day was a race to the finish. My girls were little, and I worked full-time outside the home, including nights and weekends.
My life was INSANE.
Even though I wanted desperately to change my lifestyle, I didn't think I had the time to make it a priority. Not to mention I was tired all the time.
My life was a hamster wheel of waking up, getting kids to daycare, going to work, making dinner, getting kids ready for bed, possibly cleaning up, and then passing out. Repeat the next day.
⭐️ Today, I've learned that taking the time to create systems, habits, and routines will give me more time.
Oh, and eating healthier foods and exercise provides more energy than any cup of coffee.
So everything I thought I didn't have time for was the exact things I needed to create more time in my schedule. π read that again.
✅ A meal plan removes the daily guessing game of "What should I eat."
✅ Prepping meals ahead of time on Sunday assures I'll have healthy food available during the week and shaves off hours during the week I would've spent trying to prepare meals.
✅ Instead of wasting time in the morning watching TV, I exercise, which helps me stay in shape and provides energy to get through the day.
Prioritizing the time to do these things, in the end, gave me more time.
Can you relate to any of these struggles? I could list out many more, but those are the three that impacted my life the most.
How did I make those changes? What's different today?
I figured out systems that worked for me and created habits and routines that made eating healthier and exercising a priority.
Did this happen overnight? Absolutely not; it took time and lots of trial and error.
Even now, as my life changes, I need to fine-tune things.
Good news, I've taken everything I've learned since starting on my weight loss journey and developed the Organize Yourself Skinny eCourse.
You don't need to spend hours searching endlessly, finding the right system - I've done all the work for you!
In this onling course, I'll take you step-by-step through all the strategies I used and continue to use to organize my life, reduce stress, eat healthier, exercise more, and lose weight!
One of my students said, "Tammy, it's like you're in my head." Well, I kind of am because I've been there, and I get it, and I know what you're going through and how to get you moving in a healthier direction.
