Earlier this year, HSE made a significant investment in its battery abuse testing facilities, making the HSE Science and Research Centre home to the largest, bespoke battery abuse testing chamber of its type in the UK. Last week our battery team carried out further commissioning of some of the specialist features of the new chamber by overheating a 5Ah 21700 cell, a fraction of the size of modules and packs they will usually be testing, but big enough to test the data acquisition and control systems, the high speed, high-definition cameras and the filtered extraction system. The addition of the new chamber means that HSE now has three purpose-built test chambers offering a wide range of battery abuse testing at cell to module level. Some of the tests include, but are not limited to, thermal abuse testing, short circuiting, overcharging and nail penetration testing.
