HSE hydrogen expertise helps propel the possibility of zero-carbon aviation

HSE's knowledge and expertise in the safe use of gaseous and liquid hydrogen is helping the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) assess the risks and safety implications of using hydrogen as part of its FlyZero programme.

The HSE project team will draw upon over twenty years of world-leading, cutting-edge research looking into the practicality, risk and safety issues associated with utilising hydrogen as a source of energy.

Read our news story to learn more about how HSE will help the UK aerospace sector to safely unlock hydrogen's capability to power the next generation of aircraft into our skies.

HSE bolsters battery abuse testing capability

Earlier this year, HSE made a significant investment in its battery abuse testing facilities, making the HSE Science and Research Centre home to the largest, bespoke battery abuse testing chamber of its type in the UK.

Last week our battery team carried out further commissioning of some of the specialist features of the new chamber by overheating a 5Ah 21700 cell, a fraction of the size of modules and packs they will usually be testing, but big enough to test the data acquisition and control systems, the high speed, high-definition cameras and the filtered extraction system.

The addition of the new chamber means that HSE now has three purpose-built test chambers offering a wide range of battery abuse testing at cell to module level. Some of the tests include, but are not limited to, thermal abuse testing, short circuiting, overcharging and nail penetration testing.

HSE at Hazards 31

The leading process safety conference starts in a few week's time and, as you would expect, features a number of speakers from HSE as part of the conference programme.

This year we share the knowledge we have acquired working experimentally to understand the failure of lithium-ion batteries as part of the Libris project, as well as present findings from our involvement in HyDeploy, the first UK live trial to successfully blend hydrogen into a private gas network on a campus at Keele University.

HSE's work in hydrogen, batteries and other low carbon energy vectors is underpinning the regulations, codes and standards that will enable industry to safely deploy lower carbon energy technologies.

Contact Stuart Hawksworth or Kate Jeffrey to discuss how we can help you achieve Safe Net Zero.
