GAIN Template Header

The following GAIN reports were released on November 2, 2021.

_______

El Salvador: Food and Agricultural Import Regulations and Standards Country Report

In El Salvador there is no specific food law. However, the Ministry of Health's (MINSAL) Health Code is used to enforce food safety for all food and beverage products. MINSAL is in charge of food and beverage product registration. Animal origin products and produce are regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAG). The Consumer Protection Law is enforced by the Consumer Protection Agency (DDC). Food safety norms are becoming more strict and sometimes lend themselves to the creation of non-tariff barriers.

Japan: CAA Invites Public Comment on Proposed Revisions to Food Labeling Standards

Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) is seeking public comment on proposed revisions to its Food Labeling Standards, including two related to agricultural biotechnology. CAA proposes the addition of processed food containing genetically engineered (GE) mustard leaf to the list of products requiring a GE label. In addition, CAA proposes the removal of the high oleic acid trait from the list of specific genetically engineered agricultural traits that require a GE label. The public comment period closes on November 26, 2021.

New Zealand: Fresh Deciduous Fruit Annual

The same problems that beset apple production in 2020/2021, especially harvest labor shortages, could persist into 2021/2022. This is expected to constrain production increases, with 2021/22 production forecast at 578,000 metric tons (MT). Although this is five percent up on the 2020/2021 crop, primarily because of expanded harvested area, it still remains substantially below the record crop harvested in 2019/20. Exports are also forecast to increase to 380,000 MT (up seven percent), but this would still be below the levels reached pre-COVID-19.

Philippines: Philippine Wood Products Report

The Philippines' declining production of lumber and other wood products cannot meet the country's growing demand for residential, commercial, and public construction projects. As operations in the industry gain momentum, FAS Manila forecasts a 5 percent rise in wood imports by year-end and additional opportunities over the following years. Due to the country's growing import requirement, Post projects a 50 percent increase in U.S. forestry product exports this year, with long-term potential in this emerging market.

Poland: African Swine Fever Situation in Poland

From January 1, 2021, through October 29, Poland's Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) officially notified 119 African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks on hog farms and 2,278 cases among wild boars. In 2021, the virus has affected mainly smallholder hog farms located in the Podkarpackie and in the Warmia-Mazury Provinces in eastern Poland. Polish veterinary authorities implemented the recommended protection and surveillance protocols to contain the outbreaks.

South Africa: Grain and Feed Update

After last season's second consecutive bumper corn crop, the positive outlook for the South African grain industry will continue in the 2021/22 MY as evidenced by a 30 percent upsurge in tractor sales and the intention of commercial producers to maintain a corn area of 2.7 million hectares. As a result, South Africa's corn crop for the 2021/22 MY, under normal climatic conditions, could once again top 16.0 million tons, with the potential for 3.0 million tons of corn exports. In the current marketing year (2020/21 MY), after producing the second largest crop in history of 16.8 million tons, South Africa is heading to 3.5 million tons of corn exports.

Spain: Food and Agricultural Import Regulations and Standards Export Certificate Report

This report focuses on specific Spanish certification requirements that differ or are in addition to EU-harmonized certification. Compared to 2020, this report contains new country specific certificates as well as updated links to relevant information sources and contacts. This report should be read in conjunction with the EU FAIRS Export Certificate report prepared by the FAS Office in the U.S. Mission to the European Commission (USEU).
