Homemakers' chat script, 1944. Photo of cranberries being havested by Keith Weller, USDA ARS.
In 1944, the United States faced a cranberry shortage, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Homemakers' Chat broadcast was there to help. The November broadcast provides multiple suggestions for cranberry substitutes for the holiday table. Spiced peaches, anyone?
NAL has digitized over 5,000 Homemakers' Chat scripts, providing an interesting snapshot of domestic life from 1926 to 1946.
