Keep your knives in pro slicing shape for less than $10
Before the pandemic curtailed travel I was staying at an Airbnb outside of Acadia National Park in Maine. It was a lovely house set on a hill that ran right down to the Penobscot Bay with postcard perfect New England sunsets. But it suffered from one of the problems that has plagued every Airbnb I've ever stayed at: a set of kitchen knives so dull they are borderline useless. I might as well have used a hammer to divide up my watermelon. It would have been just as effective.
Dull knives, of course, are a problem at home too, and the solution is a knife sharpener. Your knife set probably came with a honing steel (something that is absolutely useful and you should use on the regular), but to really keep a sharp edge to your prized chef's knife, you need a real sharpener. Contributor Sarah Zorn and staff writer Wilder Davies went deep testing a number of both automatic and manual knife sharpeners and the results are good for both your knives and your wallet. There are some powerful automatic sharpeners that will keep your knives in professional cutting shape at all times, but there is also a tiny $8 manual sharpener that delivers excellent results. Bonus points because its petite size means it packs easily into a suitcase for any future vacation kitchens that leave something to be desired.
