Good Sunday evening! If you use Sunday to plan out groceries and meals for the week, this email may find you neck-deep in grocery lists and rough bulleted plans that, for me, look like the following: "Monday: Pesto pasta / Tuesday: Tacos of some kind?? / Wednesday: Leftovers / Thursday: CHEESE?" etcetera. I've been hitting a mental block with meal planning lately; my lists have hardly been inspired, but we muddle through. I am starting to suspect that my lack of inspiration is directly correlated to my pandemic-era decision to rarely go inside a grocery store. I've relied a lot on grocery pick-up and delivery, and I'm so grateful for these options.
But Thursday night I decided to do my big shop myself, walking the aisles of my enormous local Giant Eagle, and suddenly I had a million ideas for dinner. I picked up a can of cooked lentils and thought about the walnuts languishing in the pantry, then bought radicchio, herbed goat cheese, and all the makings of a great no-cook lunch salad. I paused over pasta shapes I never think to search for online. I spent a long time browsing my beloved freezer aisles, finding answers to the questions on my dinner list. (Tacos this week? They'll be vegetarian, thanks to Morningstar's plant-based chorizo crumbles.)
At Kitchn, we have always embraced the fact that, for most of us, cooking inspiration often starts at the grocery store, tucked between the practical needs of oat milk + eggs + peanut butter. We spot something new to try, or a flavor we suddenly realize we're craving. We see what's on sale, and what might turn a pantry hold-out into a great meal. And one of the ways we explore and celebrate alllllll the most exciting groceries that make mealtime not just doable but fun, is our annual feature Kitchn Essentials, where our team tastes, tests, and chooses the groceries in every category that we love the most. Our latest edition just dropped and I can hardly wait for you to take a look! Here it is: over a hundred picks for groceries that run the gamut from classics (still tough to beat Cheerios as a cereal!) to up-and-coming exciting meal helpers, like the terrific Omsom sauces and starter kits. (Our social media editor, Andrea, credits Omsom's bulgogi sauce with convincing her to eat and love tofu for the first time.) You'll find our favorite olive oil, cocoa powder, salad kit, fancy cashews and pistachios, and so much more. And while we've always included plant-based groceries in our picks, this year we dedicated a full section to plant-based goodies (our pick for vegan mayo is very good).
So if you're a little stumped on your meals this week, take a look through our list; you may find something new to throw in your cart and to make a meal a little more exciting.
