Western powers appear to be preparing for the fall of Kabul after the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada all announced fresh troop deployments to help evacuate citizens and other residents of the Afghan capital on Thursday. And as these countries line up to leave, it's difficult to overstate the tragedy of a situation where thousands of people have been killed, millions of people have become refugees, and trillions of dollars in resources have been burned—only for Afghanistan to end up where it started 20 years ago.

"...it does bear reminding oneself that this situation is not all that different from what existed in the beginning, albeit without the loss of blood and treasure, and however difficult it might be to accept this reality, does anyone seriously believe that the continuation of American involvement would make the least difference?"

"It's hard to go out and die or be wounded. Soldiers like to have a fighting chance. It helps if they are fully trained. The Afghans have asked for technical training again and again. Their English isn't great, but it is clear what is being requested (and not provided)."
