Maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticide residues in or on food and feed of plant and animal origin are established in Great Britain (GB) under Regulation (EC) No 396/2005.

GB MRLs are set by inclusion in a new Statutory Register.

This eBulletin is to notify all stakeholders of recent amendments to the GB MRL Statutory Register, setting new statutory levels.

Retained Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 on maximum residue levels of pesticides in or on food and feed of plant and animal origin (as it applies in Great Britain, pursuant to the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 and European Union (Withdrawal Agreement Act 2020). Great Britain ("GB") refers to England, Scotland and Wales.

GB MRL amendments (July 2021)

In order to accommodate new authorisations in GB and to set import tolerances to meet the requirements of international trade, new MRLs have been set in the GB MRL Statutory Register for the following active/commodity combinations:

  • Glyphosate/ borage seeds

  • Prohexadione/ various oils

The new MRL for glyphosate came into force on 22 July 2021 and the new MRLs for prohexadione came into force on the 27 July 2021 as indicated in the GB MRL Statutory Register.

Visit HSE's website for the evaluation reports, reasoned opinions and decision documents supporting these new MRLs.

Future GB MRL amendments (adopted July 2021)

Dimethoate is no longer an approved active substance in GB and all plant protection product authorisations have been withdrawn.

As harmful effects on human health cannot be excluded, it was proposed to lower all MRLs for dimethoate and the breakdown product omethoate to the limit of quantification.

Following completion of the notification process to the World Trade Organization, new MRLs at the limit of quantification for dimethoate and omethoate were adopted on the 5 July 2021.

In order to allow trading partners and food business operators time to adjust to the new lower MRLs the date of entry into force of the new MRLs is 5 January 2022.

The future MRLs can be reviewed on the HSE website in the published MRL reviews list. The current MRLs in the GB MRL Statutory Register have an expiry date of 4 January 2022 and the new MRLs will appear in the register from 5 January 2022.
