Hello Everyone!
I hope that you're all staying healthy and enjoying the beautiful (or maybe too hot?? haha) weather outdoors! ☀️⛱ I am a couple days late for the August Newsletter.. apologies.. but better late than never, right?!π
Korean summers are very hot and muggy which makes many lose their appetites.. and to help people stay healthy and strong, Koreans set an eating tradition for three specific days referred to as Sambok days which mark (supposedly) the three hottest days of summer - Chobak μ΄λ³΅, Jungbok μ€λ³΅, and Malbok λ§λ³΅.
On these days it's common for Koreans to eat Samgyetang μΌκ³ν, an herbal chicken soup with ginseng, that's believed to help replenish your energy and raise the temperature of your stomach to help you tolerate the summer heat better. The next Sambok day coming up is Malbok on August 10th, so make sure to enjoy a hot bowl of Samgyetang with my recipe below!
On August 15th, Korea will also be celebrating their Independence Day, known as Gwangbokjeol κ΄λ³΅μ . This name literally translates to "The Restoration of Light" which celebrates the end of dark times and hardships in Korean history when Korea as a country became an independent country. Koreans celebrate this day with fireworks, trips to the museum and by displaying the Korean flag outside of buildings and homes.
BTW, in case you can't make Samgyetang or don't want to, I thought at least you can have some dish with chicken π- just so you are with us in beating the summer heat with healthy protein packed chicken dishes!!
You'll find a variety of spicy and non-spicy dishes and many of them are actually quite easy to make! I hope that you try some of them, and if you enjoy them, please leave me a rating!
Take care!
XOXO π
JinJoo
