Canada: Retail Foods

Canada is the largest overseas market for U.S. high-value, consumer-oriented products, with exports reaching nearly $17 billion in 2020 – representing 25 percent of the total value of U.S. consumer-oriented exports worldwide, more than doubling the value of the next largest market. Canada's retail market is mature and largely consolidated, with five retailers comprising more than 75 percent of the total retail grocery market. The remainder of the market is represented by smaller regional retail chains that include 6,800 independents and 27,000 small and independent convenience stores.

China: FDA Revised Process for Registering to Export Certain Products to China

U.S. companies interested in exporting feed additives, premixes, and compound feed to China should contact the Food and Drug Administration by July 16, 2021 to have their facilities registered with the General Administration of Customs for the People's Republic of China (GACC). Going forward, FDA will submit updated U.S. facilities lists to GACC on a quarterly basis. Those interested in exporting feed additives, premixes, and compound feed to China should first ensure their products are registered with China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) or have received a MARA waiver from product registration before requesting facility registration with FDA. Interested companies should contact FDA at CVMChinaAnnex@fda.hhs.gov with the information included in this report.

Japan: COVID-19 Pandemics Impact on Japan HRI Industry

The Government of Japan (GOJ) declared a third state of emergency (SOE) on April 28, 2021, in an attempt to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The SOE covered 10 prefectures, and included Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Aichi, Hokkaido, Hyogo, Okayama, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Okinawa. Originally set to expire on May 11, the SOE was extended to June 20. Among other restrictions, the SOE banned the sale of alcoholic beverages by restaurants and mandated that restaurants close by 8:00 pm. According to a report from the Japan Foodservice Association (JF), restaurant sales in March 2021 fell 5.2 percent from March 2020 levels on an all-store basis, down for the 13th consecutive month, and down a whopping 19.6 percent from pre-pandemic sales in March 2019. The coronavirus pandemic deeply impacted both the HRI and tourism industries, and industry stakeholders are pursuing new business models and menus that include non-alcoholic beverages as well as expanding takeout and delivery services as a result.

Kazakhstan: Second Stage 2021 Meat TRQs for Kazakhstan

On April 15, 2021, the second stage of Kazakhstan's 2021 meat quotas were announced by the Kazakhstani Ministry of Trade and Integration. The decrees approve the remaining tariff quotas for certain types of meat and poultry products for 2021, per specific importer, and came into force the day it was signed.

Portugal: Portuguese Fruit Sector Aims to Increase Investments Efficiency and Exports

Over the past five years, Portuguese fruit production has improved its efficiency and evolved into a dynamic and advanced agricultural sector. Portugal's annual fruit production is currently estimated at 1.1 million tons -- mainly oranges, apples, and Rocha pears (but its market is still not self-sufficient for certain fruits). Since 2018, Portugal is attracting foreign investors in agriculture, particularly in the Alqueva region. Due to growth in demand, both domestically, and abroad, there is room for further development of the Portuguese fruit sector.

South Africa: Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak in the KwaZulu-Natal Province

On May 28, 2021, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) announced a foot and mouth disease outbreak in the KwaZulu-Natal province. The outbreak was detected in cattle in a communal area, which was part of South Africa's previous FMD-free zone before the OIE suspended this internationally recognized status in 2019. The provincial DALRRD established a task team to control the outbreak and implement measures to contain the spread.

Uganda: Coffee Annual

Marketing year (MY) 2021/22 production and exports are forecast to hold steady from MY 2020/21 as farmers take old trees out of production via stumping. FAS/Nairobi estimates Uganda's coffee production and exports will reach record levels in MY 2020/21 as new coffee plantings mature, increasing from 5.5 million to 6 million bags and 5.4 to 5.9 million bags respectively. MY 2021/22 consumption is expected to increase modestly on a slight increase in tourism, however MY 2020/21 domestic consumption will remain depressed due to COVID lockdowns.
