China: China Releases Draft Guidelines and Thresholds for the Determination of Essentially Derived Varieties

On March 20, 2026, MARA released two documents for public comment related to its plant variety protection regulations. One document contains draft guidelines for determining Essentially Derived Varieties (EDVs), and the other document outlines thresholds for determining EDVs for ten crops including rice. The deadline for comment submissions for both draft documents is March 27, 2026.

 

China: GACC Issues Decree 280 Implementation Guidance

China's General Administration of Customs issued Announcement No. 27 (2026) providing supplemental guidance for the transition to Decree 280, which is set to become effective June 1, 2026. The notice identifies the specific "Catalogue" of imported food categorifies that require "official recommendation" for facility registration and establishes a "List" of food categories that are ineligible for automatic registration renewal.

 

Colombia: Colombian Flowers and the American Market After Six Decades of Growth

Colombia's cut flower industry has grown into a $2.4 billion export sector, supplying approximately 60 percent of flowers sold in the United States. However, in 2025 the imposition of global tariffs introduced uncertainty for an industry that sends nearly 80 percent of its production to the American market.

 

United Kingdom: Food Processing Ingredients Annual

Food and drink are the United Kingdom's largest manufacturing sector. Health and wellness demands, clean label expectations (products avoiding artificial colors and flavors) and product innovation call for specialized, functional ingredients to create products without compromising taste. Inflation driven cost pressures and volatile supply chains are squeezing margins, forcing companies to re engineer formulations and sourcing strategies. New advertising and regulatory restrictions are reshaping purchasing decisions, compelling brands to rethink formulation and packaging. The UK food and drink sector continues to reinvent itself, turning challenges into opportunities for the United States.
