Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has approved the commercial sale of genetically engineered (GE) purple tomatoes. The Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) in Australia issued a license permitting the growth of a GE tomato throughout Australia. This is the second GE fruit assessed and approved by FSANZ.
Brazil currently accounts for only about one percent of global palm oil output, yet it holds significant long-term growth potential, supported by favorable climate conditions, relatively strong labor and regulatory frameworks, and availability of degraded pasture land for cultivation. Production is largely concentrated in the Amazon region, mostly in the states of ParΓ‘ and Roraima. The sector is projected to expand steadily; however, growth remains constrained by high production costs, limited access to long-term credit, reduced government support, and security concerns in key producing regions.
China has introduced new 10-digit tariff classifications for certain commodities including 16 agriculture-related products that reduce the import value-added tax (VAT) for most of the products from 13 percent to 9 percent, effective immediately as of February 2, 2026. Key products benefiting from this lower VAT include refined sunflower oil, crude sunflower oil, refined rapeseed oil, uncooked pasta, and raw cocoa beans.
On February 5, 2026, the European Union extended the suspension of the EU's retaliatory tariffs against U.S. products for an additional six months to August 6, 2026.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a directive (F.No. STD/43-FA-Notifications/2024) granting a three-month extension for compliance with the new standards for meat sausages, which were originally published on July 10, 2025. The previous compliance deadline was February 1, 2026. With this extension, the new compliance date is now May 1, 2026.
New Zealand and India concluded negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on December 22, 2025. The agreement now needs to be examined by the New Zealand Parliament, which will adopt any domestic legislation required to implement the FTA before planned elections on November 7, 2026.
Heavy, persistent rainfall in South Africa's Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces has caused widespread flooding. South Africa has declared a national disaster as the flooding has resulted in significant infrastructure damage. Waterlogged orchards have hindered disease management and increased the risk of citrus black spot (CBS) infestation, threatening market access, especially to Europe. The affected regions do not export citrus to the United States, as only CBS-free areas in other provinces are eligible for U.S. export.
