I have been re-watching The Sopranos. You can see how this happened. In case you’ve never watched it (or don’t care to), ‘gabagool’ refers to the Italian dry-cured meat capicola (more commonly called coppa here in the UK). It’s a ‘mis-pronunciation’ or perhaps more appropriately, an evolved pronunciation, which is explained in this fascinating deep dive by Dan Nosowitz for Atlas Obscura. For something a little lighter - and to hear gabagool uttered in a way you’ll never forget - a video round-up of Sopranos slang with a gabagool section up-front (warning: may contain spoilers).
