Register for the webinar. This first-of-its-kind tool, developed for the WHO Global Campaign to Combat Ageism, marks a significant step forward in our global effort to take action to combat ageism and create #AWorld4AllAges. Ageism is how we think (stereotypes), feel (prejudices), and act (discrimination) towards others or ourselves based on age, and is harmful to our health and well-being. ************** New global guidelines urge health sector to help end female genital mutilation Embargoed until 01:01 CEST on 28 April 2025 WHO will release a new guideline with recommendations seeking to curb the rising “medicalization” of female genital mutilation (FGM) and to engage health workers to prevent the practice. While the health sector plays a key role in stopping FGM, evidence suggests that in several parts of the world, the practice is now increasingly performed by health workers. As of 2020, an estimated 52 million girls and women were subjected to FGM at the hands of health workers - around 1 in 4 cases. Typically carried out on young girls before they reach puberty, FGM includes all procedures that remove or injure parts of the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. Since 1990, the likelihood of a girl undergoing genital mutilation has decreased threefold. However, it remains common in some 30 countries, with an estimated 4 million girls each year still at risk. The new WHO guideline, titled The prevention of female genital mutilation and clinical management of complications, provides recommendations to both prevent the practice and ensure evidence-based care for survivors, covering actions for the health sector, governments, and affected communities. Embargoed materials are available on request. A webinar will take place to launch the guideline at 14h CEST. The inappropriate use of antimicrobials is a major driver of AMR, while many resource-limited settings still struggle with inadequate access to essential, quality-assured medicines. WHO is due to publish an analysis of how antibiotics are used globally on Tuesday, 29 April. The report is based on 2022 data from the Global Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) dashboard and the WHO Access, Watch, Reserve (AWaRe) classification system for antibiotics. A launch webinar for the report will take place on Wednesday 30 April 2025, from 13:00 – 14:30 CEST. 24 to 30 April 2025 World Immunization Week 2025 Over the last 50 years, essential vaccines have saved at least 154 million lives and increased infant survival by 40%. However, hard-won gains in stamping out diseases that are preventable through vaccination are in jeopardy. Outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, meningitis, and yellow fever are rising globally. In response, WHO, UNICEF and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance are calling for urgent and sustained investment to strengthen immunization systems programmes and protect significant progress achieved in reducing child mortality over the past 50 years. Under the banner, ‘Immunization for All is Humanly Possible’, World Immunization Week 2025 aims to ensure even more children, adolescents, adults – and their communities – are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.
