Article Icon 1TVA to Reapply for Federal Funds

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and its energy partners must reapply for $800 million in federal funding for the Oak Ridge reactor project after the Department of Energy removed community engagement and equity requirements from the application process.

The TVA originally applied in January for the funds to build up to four 300-megawatt reactors in Oak Ridge, aiming for commercial operation by 2033.

The reapplication process began after the Trump administration removed a clause—weighted 20%—emphasizing community engagement and a Biden-era diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mandate.

A Department of Energy official said the new merit-based process aims to accelerate nuclear technology development.

Severe weather across the South and Ohio Valley last weekend triggered a "generational" event, killing at least 18 people—including 10 deaths in Tennessee alone.

Storms knocked out power to over 70,790, downed trees along I-40, and prompted emergency declarations amid ongoing threats from swollen rivers and saturated ground.

The tornado threat has passed, but flooding remains severe after 14 inches of rain in parts of Clarksville and Hopkinsville, with dozens of road closures reported in several West Tennessee counties.

Article Icon 1 List: Most Haunted Places in Tennessee

A list of the 15 most haunted places in Tennessee features hotels, hospitals, and homes from Gatlinburg and Knoxville to Memphis and Nashville, all linked to suspected paranormal activity.

The top-ranked haunted site in Tennessee is the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel, a former Terminal Station on the National Register of Historic Places, where guests report ghostly sightings of a porter, a grieving mother, and a Civil War soldier.

The Smoky Mountains are home to Lydia, a distraught ghost said to have died in a log cabin—now part of the Greenbriar Restaurant—after being left at the altar.

Perhaps the most intriguing legend is the Bell Witch Cave, where a 19th-century family was tormented by unexplained noises, ghostly apparitions, and violent encounters. See the complete list here.
