U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-NC, led an effort Wednesday to introduce the Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act. He was joined by U.S. Sen. Ted Budd, R-NC, and nine other Republican senators.

The act empowers “any individual, spouse, parent, or child who is a victim of murder, rape, or any felony” to bring an action against the state or political subdivision of the state if it “declined to honor a lawful immigration detainer request for an alien by the Department of Homeland Security.”

The legislation also requires the state or political subdivision to waive immunity as a condition of receiving certain federal grants.

In his official Senate press release, Tillis stated, “It is time for Congress to step in and hold sanctuary cities accountable.”

Budd thanked Tillis for leading the effort and said the bill puts sanctuary cities “on notice.”

Article Icon 1Trump Appoints Interim FEMA Director

President Donald Trump appointed former Navy SEAL Cameron Hamilton as interim FEMA director Monday.

The 47-year-old married father of three graduated from Campbell University in Buies Creek, just outside of Raleigh, and served as director of the Emergency Medical Division in the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Health Security.

While some reports suggest Hamilton may join Trump during his visit to North Carolina today, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said he isn’t taking the trip. Trump is expected to arrive at Asheville Regional Airport sometime after 11 a.m. to tour the region and view Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.

Hamilton has not spoken publicly about his new role but posted “I’m honored to serve” on X Monday, the same day former FEMA Director Deanne Criswell stepped down from the agency.

Article Icon 1Black Ice and Slick Roads Stick Around

Tuesday’s winter storm dropped 7-9 inches of snow along the Outer Banks, but roads were warm enough to turn snow into slush that refroze overnight Wednesday, creating treacherous conditions for motorists Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service says black ice could remain through at least Saturday morning. Wilmington-area roads suffered the same fate, causing delays in emergency response teams’ ability to reach destinations.

From the Piedmont to the Coast, nearly 2,000 NCDOT employees and contractors are working to clear roads using snow plows and salt spreaders. As of Thursday, crews had spread more than 953,000 gallons of brine and an additional 15,000 tons of salt on North Carolina roads.

NCDOT is making progress in clearing primary roads and interstates but advises motorists to stay off secondary roads as crews work to clear them.
