I have to say that the most important thing is knowing what you can eat and not. If you have been trying to stay vegan or vegetarian, you probably know those things you shouldn't eat.
But then if you weren't raised that way you probably have succumbed to temptation in eating the wrong things that caused you problems. Likely you have been on a roller coaster ride with weight gain and not feeling so good.
So, what's to do now that all this rich food you shouldn't eat is set before you. If you have the willpower, you could eat a smaller amount. But more important than that is to remember reasons why you became a vegan or vegetarian in the first place.
You may be making your own meals already the way you know you should eat. If you don't do feasting and don't eat that way often you know you will recover. But certain foods are triggers and all it does is tempt you to eat more that way. You have come a long way and probably don't want to go back. So, you know it isn't easy with all the temptation, your eating history and support for your diet that may be lacking.
Holiday food tastes really great. But there are consequences that follow. You may get acid reflux, constipation, mysterious aches and pains and a lot more. But it is hard to say no and decide not to eat that way. It is a struggle and will likely always be. And eating mostly whole fruit and vegetables may be impossible to do all the time. What's left is knowing what the right thing is to do for your body and trying to stick with it as best as you can.
You know you will gain weight during the holidays like you usually do. There are all the cookies, pie, ice cream, turkey and much more. If you are going to feast you might as well enjoy it. No sense feeling guilty doing what you know you shouldn't do. The most important thing I found is knowing the difference between eating healthy and not. Just do the best you can. It's all you can do as a human [1].
