President Joe Biden signed a bipartisan bill Saturday that delivers more than $100 billion in disaster relief funds for damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

The funds help cover reimbursements to state governments for debris removal and first responders' overtime compensation, as well as provide payments from $750 per survivor to $42,500 for uninsured homeowners who need to rebuild.

Additional allocations include $21 billion for farmers, $8 billion for rebuilding damaged roads and highways, $12 billion for Housing and Urban Development grants, and $2.2 billion for low-interest loans for businesses, nonprofits, and homeowners who need to rebuild.

More disaster relief funds will likely be granted after Congress plans out a full-year appropriation.

A 60-foot section of I-40 in Haywood County collapsed Thursday within a 4-mile stretch that NCDOT had hoped to reopen by Jan. 1.

A spokesperson confirmed that the damage will delay the reopening, calling it an "unfortunate situation" and "a new hurdle NCDOT and its contract partners have to overcome."

Officials attribute the slide that created the new collapse to wet weather and freeze-thaw conditions.

This section of I-40—the primary connector between western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee—has been closed since late September after sustaining catastrophic damage from Hurricane Helene. View photos of the collapse here.
