| Sunday, December 29, 2024 | | Good Morning! On this day in 1845, Texas joined the United States as the 28th state in the Union when Congress approved the new Texas constitution. With New Year's Day on the horizon, it's a good opportunity to commit to making positive changes. Rather than the common resolutions, consider trying something different this year. Congress approved a bill in April that would force Chinese parent company ByteDance to divest TikTok by January 19—one day before Trump's inauguration — or face a countrywide ban. The government believes the statute is needed to eliminate a national security risk. Trump wants to find a way to "save" the popular video platform without compromising national security or Americans' free speech rights. The legislation came after U.S. officials warned that the platform posed national security risks, partly because ByteDance could be compelled to share the personal information of 170 million Americans with Beijing under Chinese law. | Oldest Pearl Harbor Survivor Dies Warren Upton, the oldest living survivor of the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the last remaining survivor of the USS Utah, died from pneumonia on Friday at 105. The Utah was moored at Pearl Harbor when Japanese planes began bombing the naval base in the early hours of Dec. 7, 1941, in an attack that propelled the U.S. into World War II. The then-22-year-old swam ashore, helping a fellow sailor reach safety. Once Upton reached Ford Island, he jumped in a trench to avoid Japanese planes strafing the area. He stayed for about 30 minutes until a truck came and took him to shelter. Upton said he didn’t mind talking about what happened during the attack, but he was upset by the memory of losing shipmates. | One Winner Claims $1.22 Billion Mega Millions Jackpot A Mega Millions player in California won the estimated $1.22 billion jackpot Friday night.
