Hello, friends! I'm pausing on a quiet Christmas afternoon to send a little cheer your way from NYC.
Whether you're celebrating a holiday this week or not, I hope you have a little extra time for rest, for gathering with loved ones, or for cooking something nourishing and tasty.
On my way to my mom's place last night, I rode along the West Side Highway, which stretches along one side of Manhattan.
I'd been busy preparing food for us and trying to wrap gifts at the last moment; a Christmas Eve frenzy is becoming more of a holiday tradition as life comes at me faster.
In fact, I hadn't had much of a chance to register that it was, in fact, Christmas Eve, and very nearly Christmas Day.
But there was no forgetting it when I glanced to my left.
There, whizzing by me, were countless Christmas trees, illuminated in the night and shining through apartment windows. They glowed cheerfully from their respective homes.
I thought about the folks that lived in these spaces, who would spend their evenings enjoying those trees up close. All of a sudden, I was immersed in holiday spirit.
I pulled up some holiday carols on my phone, and as the lyrics of "Ding Dong Merrily on High" played gently in my ears–"verily the sky is riv'n with angel singing"–I blinked away a few tears.
It's been a long autumn, but here I am on December 25 with so much to be grateful for.
So much to look forward to.
And last night's twinkling reminder of the human spirit and its desire to celebrate.
On that note, I'll soon be making merry–and sharing sweet potato lentil loaf, applesauce spice cake, and a lot of veggies–with good friends.
I wish you merry everything. May your heart be light! 💫
xo
P.S. If your holiday preparations were as ridiculously last minute as mine were this year, and you're thinking about a last-minute gift or two, A Grain, a Green, a Bean can be preordered now! It'll arrive as the snow is melting in April. 🌱
