Last week’s election re-established Georgia as a Republican stronghold, as former President Donald Trump captured Georgia’s 16 electoral votes by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris by over 117,000 votes, a shift from his 2020 loss by nearly 12,000 votes.

Trump’s success came through high margins in rural Georgia and improved performance in urban and suburban areas, helping Republicans retain their state legislature majority.

Nearly half of Latino voters, particularly men, supported Trump, responding to his campaign’s emphasis on issues like inflation and job security.

Democratic leaders, acknowledging setbacks in Latino and female voter turnout, noted their losses in key districts but maintained their foothold in the state Senate.

Former Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler has been selected by President-elect Donald Trump to co-chair his inauguration committee.

The newly formed Trump Vance Inaugural Committee, led by Loeffler and real estate developer Steve Witkoff, will oversee events for Trump’s upcoming inauguration.

In his announcement, Trump described the committee as a way to celebrate his election victory and signal the beginning of his new administration, which he said would focus on restoring "strength, success, and common sense" in the Oval Office.

Loeffler, who was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2020 after Johnny Isakson’s resignation, served briefly before losing her seat to Democrat Raphael Warnock in a 2021 special election.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced that the state and its local governments will receive over $55 million from a settlement with Kroger, whose pharmacies are required to monitor opioid prescriptions, to support opioid treatment, prevention, and recovery services.

This funding is part of a larger $1.37 billion settlement involving 30 states, which resolves claims that Kroger contributed to the opioid crisis; the agreement also mandates Kroger's pharmacies to monitor and report suspicious opioid prescription activity.

Carr emphasized the ongoing impact of the opioid crisis in Georgia, highlighting that opioid-related overdose deaths increased by more than 300 percent from 2010 to 2022, driven largely by fentanyl.

The funds from this and other opioid settlements totaling over $1 billion will support expanded access to care across the state.
