Article Icon 1Security Incidents Force Evacuations in Houston

A suspicious package and a bomb threat forced authorities to evacuate the Saudi Consulate in Houston and a Galveston synagogue on Monday, a year to the day after Hamas terrorists attacked Israel.

A bomb squad was called around 7:30 p.m. when vibrations and sounds were detected coming from a package addressed to the Saudi Consulate. Workers were allowed back into the Galleria-area building when the all-clear was given around 9 p.m.

Earlier, around 2:45 p.m., the congregation of B’Nai Israel in Galveston notified police they had received an email about a bomb threat. Authorities didn’t find any explosives nearby and learned that other Jewish places of worship had received a similar email.

The one-year anniversary of the deadly attack was marked by vigils and protests across the country.

Article Icon 1Officials Push Austin-Monterrey Rail Line

Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai and Travis County Judge Andy Brown, along with several other officials from Texas and Mexico, took a ride on Amtrak’s Texas Eagle last week to promote the construction of a high-speed rail line connecting Austin, San Antonio, Laredo, and Monterrey.

The decades-old idea has gained traction this year with the creation of the Texas Passenger Rail Advisory Committee and a statement of support from Nuevo León’s governor.

The advocacy group aims to highlight the benefits of a rail line to ease congestion along the busy I-35 corridor.

In 2017, state legislators banned the use of public funds to develop a high-speed rail line operated by a private entity, halting plans for an Austin-to-Monterrey route that had been in development since 2009.
