Welcome to day 5 of the Mason Jar Salad Challenge! I hope you are loving your salads! Today I'm highlighting a steak salad inspired by my oldest daughter. The salad layers include a delicious balsamic vinaigrette, cucumber, red bell pepper, red onions, and tender steak.
My daughter loves to get a similar steak salad from Core Life, which costs over $10 and is the main reason I decided to make it at home. My daughter says the steak salad I make is waaaayyyy better! So, save your money and make this at home.
Cooking & Shopping Tips
One of the things you might notice with this steak salad is it doesn't include tomatoes. Instead, the barricade consists of red bell peppers, cucumber, and red onions. The veggies are delicious in the balsamic dressing but also pair great with steak. If you want tomatoes, you can certainly add them in.
We love blue cheese crumbles in our house! But, if blue cheese is too strong, you can swap in goat cheese, feta, or milder cheese like fresh mozzarella.
Okay, let's chat about steak. For the best-tasting steak salad, I like to use a high-quality organic grass-fed cut of beef such as tenderloin, rib-eye steak, sirloin steak, or New York strip steak. I've also used top sirloin or flank steak with success.
The steak is split between 5 portions, so I don't mind spending a little extra money.
You can purchase organic grass-fed steak at most grocery stores, and I've even seen it at Aldis or a wholesale store like BJ's wholesale or Costco. However, if you don't have access to organic beef, check out Butcher Box, one of my favorite places to order high-quality meats.
Mason Jar Salad Q & A
Are there better dressings than others to use?
It entirely depends on your taste. I've used both vinaigrettes and creamy dressings. My favorites are vinaigrettes because I love how the tomatoes and other vegetables taste after marinating in the dressing. But the creamy dressings are good, too; you have to shake the jar a bit more with creamier dressings to get it all out.
My best advice is that if you're not going to make homemade dressings, choose a healthy store-bought dressing with minimal ingredients. Many salad dressings from the store have hidden sugars, gluten, additives, and preservatives. So, turn the bottle over and read the label before purchasing.
