The importance of being organized

Hi reader,

My husband and I walked through TONS of houses when we were looking to move, and as a foodie, I naturally looked in the pantry. Not to snoop, but so I knew what I would be working with.

I was so surprised that the vast majority of the pantries I looked into were in complete disarray. I immediately started wondering...
How could anyone find anything?

Imagine how long it would take to cook, spending so much time digging through the shelves!

I wonder how often they bought something, only to realize they already had that same item at home.

That's when it hit me that one of the reasons I can get dinner ready fast, and be so efficient in the kitchen, is because my kitchen is ORGANIZED.

At any time, my husband or kids could ask me where something is and I can answer them. There's no wondering or "you might check here" or "you might check there." Every food has a "home," or a spot where it's supposed to be. And when everything is in the right place, you work in the kitchen like a well-oiled machine!

I suggest you walk through your kitchen and pin-point two areas that drive you absolutely crazy, for whatever reason. This can be the fridge or the spice cabinet or even the drawer with all the measuring cups. For both places, clean them out, get rid of what's bad or broken, and create a system that is functional and works for you!

Here are some more ideas to get you started: 9 Rules for Organizing a Real Food Kitchen.

And honestly, if you have a small space or wish to build a stockpile, think outside the box. I teach my Grocery Budget Bootcamp students in our lesson on Stockpiling, that it's ok to store food in places other than the kitchen.

When we lived in a tiny condo in California, I stored extra canned goods in my bedroom closet! In my house in Georgia, I had extra space in the basement for long-term dry goods. (Think bulk grains and beans.)

This works for kitchen appliances or not-so-often used dishes too. Canning jars can go in a closet. Or even look nice on a bookshelf in the dining room. There's a lot of possibilities, but however you choose to go, having a "home" for everything makes a HUGE difference in the efficiency of your kitchen.

Have you come up with a unique way to organize your kitchen space? I'd love to hear it!

ALL my best ♥,
