World Food Safety Day 2022 June 7 is World Food Safety Day! World Food Safety Day is an annual celebration to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect, and manage foodborne risks. This year's theme is, "Safer Food, Better Health." Join FDA on World Food Safety Day as we spread the word about ways to reduce the risks of foodborne illness, also called food poisoning. Learn how you can participate in World Food Safety Day. Share food safety messages from FDA on Twitter and Facebook. Supplement Your Knowledge with New Materials from FDA Many Americans take dietary supplements for a variety of reasons, whether recommended by their healthcare professional or on their own. Some supplements can help people meet the daily requirements of essential nutrients or improve or maintain their overall health. But dietary supplements may also come with health risks, so it's important to know the facts. FDA has developed a new initiative, Supplement Your Knowledge, with materials for consumers, healthcare professionals, and teachers to educate, inform, and broaden their understanding of dietary supplements. These materials include information on dietary supplement regulation, labeling, claims, benefits, risks, and adverse event reporting. Additional information can also be found at www.fda.gov/dietarysupplements. To Tan or Not to Tan On the silver screen, a golden tan may present a well-lived life: sailing under the sun. In nature, the suntan is the skin's defense against damaging UV rays. A number of cosmetic products are marketed for consumers to achieve a tanned appearance without having to go out in the sun or use artificial sources of ultraviolet radiation. These "sunless tanner" products usually contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a color additive that darkens the skin by reacting with amino acids in the skin's surface. "Sunless bronzer" products are often used to describe a variety of products intended to achieve a temporary tanned appearance. Please find more details about these products and their regulations in Sunless Tanners & Bronzers. Please note: sunless tanners and bronzers may or may not provide protection from the sun. Only those products that contain sunscreen ingredients and are labeled with sun protection factor ("SPF") numbers may provide protection (See "How to Help Protect Your Skin from the Sun").  Sunscreen products intended to protect consumers from the sun are regulated as drugs. Products intended as makeup and sun protection are both cosmetics and drugs (See "Is It a Cosmetic, a Drug, or Both (Or Is It Soap?").
