USDA and HHS Agencies Publish WGS Research Article in Journal of Food Protection

USDA and Department of Health and Human Services agencies have published a research article titled "Use of Whole Genome Sequencing by the Federal Interagency Collaboration for Genomics for Food and Feed Safety in the United States" in the peer-reviewed Journal of Food Protection.

The article, authored by agencies participating in the Interagency Collaboration for Genomics for Food and Feed Safety (Gen-FS), summarizes the use of and transition to whole genome sequencing (WGS) technology to detect and characterize pathogens commonly transmitted by food and to identify their sources. It also describes the use of different WGS methodologies in foodborne pathogen analysis, investigative processes, and how the agencies systematically harmonized the differences in WGS approaches.

The Gen-FS agencies include USDA's FSIS, Agricultural Research Service, and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, and HHS' the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and Drug Administration.

FSIS Posts AAR for Salmonella Newport Outbreaks Linked to Ground Beef Products

FSIS has posted an after-action review (AAR) for two Salmonella Newport outbreaks associated with ground beef that occurred during 2016 to 2019.

The investigations were conducted in collaboration with public health officials in multiple states and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Salmonella Newport strain associated with the outbreaks has been characterized as a reoccurring strain because it has caused repeated outbreaks of human illnesses with similar epidemiologic characteristics.
