5 Foods you should NOT Refrigerate!

Hey reader reader,

I'm Richa, the face behind My Food Story. Welcome to this series where I'll be sending you an email exclusive tip/recipe every Wednesday!

Here's today's Tip/Kitchen Hack:

The wonders of technology have made cold storage a dream. Refrigerators nowadays have smart features that allow you to order your groceries even! But as smart as they can be, there are still a few foods that lose their charm when you refrigerate them.

Here are a few ingredients that last longer when you don't refrigerate them:

  1. Potato - Potatoes are meant to be stored in a cool dry place, away from direct light. They don't even have to be stored in a container! When refrigerated, the cold temperature causes the starches in the potato to break down and become gritty. If you love potatoes, check out my Bombay Potatoes recipe - it's a chatpata aloo fry! 😊
  2. Honey - This natural sweetener lasts longer when stored at room temperature. The high sugar content also keeps it from spoiling. Just remember to store it in a dry place. The cold temperatures in a fridge cause the sugars to crystallize and seize up instead!
  3. Onion - Onions (uncut) are best stored on the counter, away from direct light. The excess moisture and cold temperatures of a fridge cause it to become mushy and rot. Peeled and cut onions can be stored in a sealed container on the countertop (if using immediately) or in the vegetable drawer of a fridge if using later.
  4. Garlic - Storing garlic in an open, dry and well ventilated spot allows it to preserve its pungent flavors. Once peeled, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use within a few days!
  5. Bread - Store bread in the refrigerator only if you like dry and stale slices! Yes, refrigeration can prevent mold growth but it also dries out the bread. The key is to keep it on the countertop but away from moisture. If you have a lot of bread and want to save it for later, wrap it tightly in cling film and freeze it. Bread is one of the easiest things to thaw and use again! If you need to quickly use up bread that's going stale, try this recipe - French Pizza Bread Toasts ❤️

Pro tip: Remember to store onions and potatoes away from each other. The gasses released by these two vegetables cause them to spoil quicker if stored together.

Hope this helps!! Is there anything else you need help with? Reply and tell me and I'll make sure to include it in my next few emails.

Happy Cooking,

Richa Gupta
