State of Care warns of a "tsunami of unmet need" State of Care - our annual assessment of the state of health and social care in England - warns that urgent action is needed to tackle the increased pressures and stresses caused by staff shortages. Ian Trenholm, our chief executive, said: "As we go into winter, the health and care workforce are exhausted and depleted – which has clear implications for the vital care they deliver. "While staffing is an issue for all sectors, we're particularly concerned about adult social care. We're seeing rising vacancy rates, some providers having to hand back their registrations as they don't have enough staff to deliver care, and examples of quality suffering due to lack of staff. "Increased stability on funding and a clear workforce plan for social care benefits everyone – but further instability could result in a ripple effect across the wider health and care system which risks becoming a tsunami of unmet need across all sectors, with increasing numbers of people unable to access care." | | |
What people think of their hospital care Our latest national survey of hospital inpatients finds that most people are positive about their hospital care, but too many feel let down by a lack of information and support when they leave. The survey captures the views and experience of more than 73,000 people who stayed in one of 137 acute and specialist NHS trusts in England for at least one night during November 2020. A small number of trusts with smaller patient throughput (such as specialist trusts) had to sample back to earlier months. The majority (75%) of respondents rated their overall experience as eight or higher out of ten - with more than a third of people rating it ten out of ten. But some people surveyed were less positive when asked about the information provided to them at the point of discharge – particularly in relation to medication and how to manage their condition or access further support once home. The survey findings have been shared with each trust so that they can review their individual results and take steps to address any areas where improvements are needed. We use the findings as part of our wider monitoring of the quality of hospital services and to plan and target our inspections. | Help shape our work Our CitizenLab service helps you shape the work that we do. You can also sign in to see what activities are currently live and ready for you to take part in. | CQC wins grant to support innovation in general practice CQC has been awarded a grant of £169,000 to support innovation by GPs working to reduce health inequalities in areas of deprivation. Working closely with Yorkshire & Humber Academic Health Science Network, the project will explore the innovative ways that GPs have tackled health inequalities, as well as any challenges around delivery and having their work recognised by the regulatory process. What we learn from this project will also help inform CQC's regulatory policy and be the basis for a new toolkit to help practices develop and evidence their own innovative projects to reduce health inequalities. The grant comes from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy's (BEIS) Regulators' Pioneer Fund.
