2020 Census Island Areas Population and Housing Unit Counts Released Today Written by: Steven Wilson, William Koerber and Evan Brassell The combined population of the territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and the U.S. Virgin Islands was just under 339,000, according to the first results of the 2020 Island Areas Censuses released today. The four Island Areas are located in the Pacific and the Caribbean. In addition to conducting a count of people and housing units for all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts the Island Areas Censuses to produce population and housing counts for each of the four Island Areas. Other surveys such as the American Community Survey (ACS) are not conducted in these territories. Therefore, the Census Bureau used a long-form questionnaire to meet the Island Areas' data needs for demographic, social, economic, and housing unit information.  American Samoa The U.S. Census Bureau today released the 2020 Census population and housing unit counts for American Samoa. As of April 1, 2020, the American Samoa's population was 49,710, representing a decrease of 10.5% from the 2010 Census population of 55,519. The housing unit count was 11,807 in 2020, representing an increase of 7.7% from the 2010 Census housing unit count of 10,963.  Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands The U.S. Census Bureau today released the 2020 Census population and housing unit counts for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. As of April 1, 2020, the Northern Mariana Islands' population was 47,329 representing a decrease of 12.2% from the 2010 Census population of 53,883. The housing unit count was 18,290 in 2020, representing a decrease of 12.3% from the 2010 Census housing unit count of 20,850.  Guam The U.S. Census Bureau today released the 2020 Census population and housing unit counts for Guam. As of April 1, 2020, Guam's population was 153,836, representing a decrease of 3.5% from the 2010 Census population of 159,358. The housing unit count was 51,555 in 2020, representing an increase of 2.0% from the 2010 Census housing unit count of 50,567.  U.S. Virgin Islands The U.S. Census Bureau today released the 2020 Census population and housing unit counts for the U.S. Virgin Islands. As of April 1, 2020, the U.S. Virgin Islands' population was 87,146, representing a decrease of 18.1% from the 2010 Census population of 106,405. The housing unit count was 57,257 in 2020, representing an increase of 2.4% from the 2010 Census housing unit count of 55,901. |
