Happy Chuseok!

Hello Everyone!

Can you believe that fall is already here?! Although it was nice to enjoy the warm weather and an abundance of fresh garden vegetables, I'm really looking forward to some cooler temperatures and crisp autumn air.

Not only is fall right around the corner, but Chuseok 좔석 (Autumn Eve) or Hangawi ν•œκ°€μœ„ (in pure Korean) and also known as Korean Thanksgiving, is being celebrated this year on Tuesday, September 21st.

Chuseok 좔석 is a major harvest festival that falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar on the full moon. On this day, Koreans visit their hometowns to spend time with their families, eat traditional foods and perform ancestral rites (Jesa μ œμ‚¬) and give thanks for the bountiful harvest.

Tables are also filled with traditional foods, newly harvested rice and fruits as part of an ancestral memorial ceremony called Charye μ°¨λ‘€. In the old days Koreans firmly believed that you had to offer these foods and respects to their ancestors to ensure good harvest and fortune throughout the year.

I have some more information about it in my 9 Chuseok Recipes post below!

The photo above is a simplified Jesa table put together by my mother-in-law, just to give you an idea of how it looks!

Other traditions for Chuseok include gift-giving and making Songpyeon μ†‘νŽΈ (rice cakes). Markets are very busy during this time and full of gift sets with expensive and high-quality cuts of meat, dried fish, fresh fruits, snacks and even SPAM because - you know, Koreans love Spam!! 😜

Songpyeon μ†‘νŽΈ is a special traditional rice cake that is always enjoyed during this holiday and made with various fillings such as sweet mung beans, chestnuts, beans or crushed sesame seeds mixed with honey!

These are steamed on a bed of pine needles which not only give them a wonderful aroma, but it's believed to transfer "chi" to the one that consumes it and make them strong and healthy just like a pine tree.

Fall is also the best time for fresh, quality seafood, so I've included some of my favorite seafood recipes below!

Have a Happy Chuseok everyone and take care!

XOXO πŸ’•

Maepssalgaru λ©₯μŒ€κ°€λ£¨ is a type of rice flour that is used to make Songpyeon that's made from short-grain rice while it is still wet. It may be difficult for some of you to find in stores, but with this recipe, now you can make it at home!

GYERAN JJIM

Block 48th

Gyeran Jjim is a popular and easy to make steamed egg dish and I have two different recipes! The first one is Steamed Eggs in Hot Pot which is the more commonly known version served at Korean BBQ restaurants where the eggs are cooked in a hot pot (ttukbaegi).

The second version is Korean Eggs Steamed with Shrimp and Chives where the eggs are actually cooked in a water bath using fresh minced shrimp, veggies and anchovy stock.

GALBI JJIM
