Defrosting meat? Better safe than sorry!

Hey reader reader,

Welcome to a new series where I'll be sending you an email exclusive tip/recipe every Wednesday!

Here's today's Tip/Kitchen Hack:

If you're like me, defrosting meat is possibly one of those annoying tasks that you always forgot about! And that small mistake throws everything off track ☹️

But don't worry! I am sharing 4 SIMPLE methods to help you with your defrosting challenge! But before we get to the dos of defrosting, let's talk a little bit about the don'ts:

  • Never leave frozen meat open on the counter to defrost. This will result in cross contamination and food spoilage.
  • Remember, the danger zone for food substances is between 5C/40F to 60C/140F. This is the temperature range you want to keep your food out of. This means, food is safe when frozen, chilled or heated beyond 60C/140F. The same applies to defrosting, you cannot directly defrost food over the counter!
  • If you are in a hurry, you can directly cook small frozen cuts of meat like beef or chicken mince, but do not forget that this will leave out water while cooking. Remember to adjust the liquid while cooking to ensure it doesn't become watery.

And talking about the dos of defrosting, the rule is simple - patience. Defrosting takes time and planning unfortunately. But the good thing is, most cuts of meat can be defrosted while you do the prep work for your meal.

The best tip I can give you is to portion your meat according to your per meal requirements before freezing. This way, you only need to defrost the amount of meat needed. And the biggest perk? It would defrost much quicker too!P.S. I've shared my four trusted methods for defrosting. Here's everything in a quick graphic for you to refer to!
