Small Business Pulse Survey Updates

Phase 5 of the Small Business Pulse Survey has concluded. Data collection for Phase 6 begins August 16, 2021. Data will be released every Thursday from August 26 through October 21.

Based on responses collected July 21 – August 2, 2021, the Household Pulse Survey estimates that:

New Content

  • Of adults living in households with children under age 5, 29.4% were in homes where children were unable to attend daycare/other childcare arrangement due to safety concerns in the past 4 weeks

  • Of adults living in homes w/ children, 30.3% were in households where children received food assistance in the past 7 days

  • 57.2% of American adults lived in homes where someone worked onsite at a workplace in the past 7 days

  • 20.1% of American adults lived in homes that were unable to pay an energy bill in full in the last 12 months

  • Of adults living in homes that received a Child Tax Credit payment in the last 4 weeks, 67.6% either mostly spent it or used it to pay down debt

  • Overall, about 13.1% of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) adults lived in a household where there was sometimes or often not enough to eat in the past seven days, compared to 7.2% of non-LGBT adults

  • 36.6% of LGBT adults lived in a household that had difficulty paying for usual household expenses in the previous seven days, compared to 26.1% of non-LGBT adults

  • 19.8% of LGBT adults lived in a household with lost employment income in the past four weeks, compared to 16.8% of non-LGBT adults

  • Among those living in homes that were rented or owned with a mortgage or loan, 8.2% of LGBT adults said they were not at all confident that their household will be able to make their next housing payment on time, compared to 6.0% of non-LGBT adults

  • Of adults living in households with children, 15.7% were in homes where children had an appointment with a doctor, nurse, or other health professional by video or phone in the past 4 weeks

  • 20.8% of American adults had an appointment with a doctor, nurse, or other health professional  by video or phone in the past 4 weeks

  • 8.2% of American adults lived in homes where there was sometimes or often not enough to eat in the previous 7 days

  • 6.2% of adults are not current on their rent or mortgage payment and have slight or no confidence in making their next payment on time

  • Of adults living in homes not current on rent or mortgage, 32.7% report eviction or foreclosure in the next two months is somewhat or very likely

  • 27.6% of adults live in homes where it has been somewhat or very difficult to pay usual household expenses in the past 7 days
