Do you know how to control hazardous substances in your workplace?

If you work with hazardous substances, our Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) website can help you understand the actions you should take to stay healthy.

 

From information on the law to advice on completing COSHH assessments, there is plenty of guidance on what you need to do.

Controls to use following changes to coronavirus restrictions in Wales and Scotland

There are different approaches following changes to restrictions in Wales and Scotland.

On 7 August, Wales moved to alert level 0. There is still a legal requirement for employers to carry out a risk assessment and take reasonable measures to minimise the risk of exposure to and spread of coronavirus. There are a wide range of things that may need to be put in place to lower risks, which may include physical distancing.

 

On 9 August, Scotland moved to beyond level 0, which means physical distancing rules no longer apply. 

 

You must still control the risks and review and update your risk assessment.

Construction company fined after worker suffered life-changing injuries

Hovington Limited has been fined £34,000 for safety breaches after a worker was struck by a falling piece of plant machinery while working on a construction site in Rotherham.

An investigation by HSE found that the company failed to ensure that a safe method of work was in place when working in the vicinity of an excavator. Read this press release for more details.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) consultation

HSE has launched a formal consultation exercise on amendments to the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (PPER).

The aim of the consultation is to understand the impact on stakeholders and businesses of extending the scope of employers' duties under the PPE Regulations to workers and not just employees.

 

The consultation is running until 15 August and can be accessed here
