I'm away this week so I've turned this space over to another Kitchn team member I'd love for you to know better: Grace Elkus, our deputy food director. Grace is the editor of nearly every recipe we run, and a marvelous cook.
In last week's letter, Faith described family as an evolving experience — something that rang particularly true for me earlier this year when I moved back in with my parents at the age of 28.
While I was initially apprehensive about the new setup (I had been a plane ride away since I graduated high school), what I thought would be family time overload turned out to be me in a room by myself on Zoom. I was used to coming home during holiday breaks, when everyone was free from commitments and ready to hang. This time, all three of us were on our computers working.
I began to cherish any moment we broke away from our screens. For my dad and me, that meant taking at least two walks a day with my parents' dog, Milo, and eventually my new puppy, Bodie, who moved in the final month I was there. For my mom and me, that meant cooking dinner together. Soon after I arrived, we settled into an unspoken routine: We'd browse our cookbooks and the internet for new recipes in the morning, then share them with each other at lunchtime. After choosing our favorites and taking a trip to the store, we'd meet up to cook in the evenings.
This setup proved fruitful in more ways than one. We made some fantastic recipes, taught each other new kitchen tricks, and caught up on each other's lives. As we chopped veggies for our favorite dinner salad she filled me in on her latest volunteer work, and I brought her up to speed on the Married at First Sight drama. She taught me how to make her famous margaritas, and I helped her perfect her clean-out-the-fridge frittata. My dad got in on the action, too: We grilled pizza on the Traeger, broiled pita wedges for snacking, and made Kitchn's favorite waffles on the weekends.
Although I've since moved to Pittsburgh, my mom and I still text each other recipes and send each other dinner pics. Later this month we'll be on vacation together, and I can't wait to re-create some of our favorite meals for my sisters. Below, I'm sharing the recipes we cooked through the most. In return, I'm hoping you'll tell me: What are your favorite recipes to cook with your family?
