August 2021
Tap into Plant Intuition

If you're like me, you've been enjoying an abundance of fresh summer produce, bursting with color and flavor, like this basket of radishes I spied at the Waimea farmers market during my vacation last month. I crave them all—tomatoes, berries, summer squash, stone fruits—during these hot months and I'm in awe of their magnetic pull that's more than enjoyment alone. You see, plants intuitively know what we need from them. All plants have built-in powers, courtesy of plant compounds called phytochemicals, to propagate and protect themselves, which in turn protects our health.
Their sophisticated defense systems have evolved over thousands of years, and humans too have evolved eating these plants, reaping their protective benefits. Plants show them to us as deep purples, reds, and greens—every color reveals its own unique health benefits. Those plump cherry tomatoes I pluck off the vine each afternoon contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant plant compound shown to help naturally boost skin's protection against the August sun. Drawn to cucumbers, zucchini, watermelon, and strawberries? Their high water content helps keep you hydrated during long, hot days. Summer crops, from basil and bell peppers to raspberries and plums, are light too, so we feel cooler when we eat them. It's no surprise that every season's fruits and veggies offer exactly what we need. Fortunately, with seasonal food in farmers markets, CSAs, and supermarkets, as well as home gardens, they're never very far away. It's so fun—and so good for our health—to make the most of what is in season right now, which I'll be highlighting all month on the blog as part of a powerful plant-based lifestyle.

With Love and Gratitude,
