| Archives of Aboriginal Knowledge by Henry R. Schoolcraft, Volume II, 1860 | | In 2011, the construction of Maryland Route 200 began a chain of events that led to the discovery of a small, well-preserved Native American site on USDA property. The Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural Research Center was the location of an archeological dig of a Native American camp. This particular camp was used for the manufacture, maintenance, and repair of stone tools. Objects unearthed included projectile points, pottery sherds, and a cluster of stones probably used in a hearth. Native Americans likely occupied the site for a few days at a time to obtain resources for their larger settlement.
